In optics, the splitting of white light into
a spectrum; for example, when it passes
through a prism or a diffraction grating. It
occurs because the prism (or grating) bends
each component wavelength to a slightly
different extent. The natural dispersion of
light through raindrops creates a rainbow.
Dispersion also refers to the distribution of
microscopic particles in a colloid.
